Pro-Palestine Protest Sees Large Police Presence

The NZR was on hand in confusing scenes during last Saturday's Pro-Palestine protests. Protester Yassa Abdulal alleges a third party was the cause of the Police presence.

“And what should our response be? I’ve just been told [inaudible]…It’s really important we stay united and we stay disciplined. We need to confront fascism in a united fashion.”

Yassa [Abdulal] and another protester Megan have made serious allegations against members of this religious group said to be in the vicinity at the time of the rally.

In chaotic scenes, a large Pro-Palestine demonstration was met by a significant Police presence on the Bridge of Remembrance last Saturday.

On first impressions, it seemed Police were present to confront the group.

Their arrival was heralded with megaphoned chants. “Freedom for Palestine” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” rang out along Oxford Terrace, as the group moved towards the Bridge and Police.

Dressed in high-vis tops, Police fell into a line across the bridge. A few demonstrators were already stationed on the bridge, while black-clad individuals on its right-hand side were seen departing.

The group halted in front of The Terrace’s bars and eateries. From the second floor onlookers gorked down at them.

“Can you just ask the person next to you ‘Why are they here?’, ” asked a man in the group.

“And what should our response be?”
