Kathmandu to Leave Riccarton Road

3 July 2025. The New Zealand Reporter: The growing list of businesses to leave Riccarton's downtown area.

Kathmandu’s Riccarton Road store will shift to Westfield Mall in October, making it just the latest in a long list of businesses to up sticks or close in the downtown area.

The most recent was Velvet Burger. In the same block, 5 businesses have departed. They include a Bargain Chemist outlet, AMI insurance and a retail outlet.

On the other side of the main road, MJ Expose Health and Beauty has also departed.

Ella's Job Hunt Begins After Cook Brothers Announce Velvet Burger Riccarton Closure

Ella’s hunt for employment has begun, after Cook Brothers announced the closure of its Riccarton business Velvet Burger. By last count, Riccarton’s main street has 13 empty premises and 5 empty buildings (with two businesses operating within, being the exception).

Kathmandu’s departure also sees it added to a growing list of vacant premises in Riccarton.

The new outlet will open in Westfield Mall near H & M. For lease signs have already been placed in the Riccarton Road premises.

On a bright note, a Middle Eastern restaurant The Burj has opened in a long vacant site close to the railway line, graffiti removed from a vacant site and a mural added to a hotel and hospitality block close to Hagley Park.
