NZDF Plane Spots Drone; Christchurch Airspace Sterilised, As Associated Press Notes NASA Collision Risk

23 April 2025. The New Zealand Reporter: Drone activity and NZ Defence Force involvement.

The New Zealand Defence Force were involved in the detection of a drone flying in controlled airspace over Christchurch’s eastern suburbs in September 2023, confirmed Christchurch Airport (CIAL). The find led to the temporary sterilisation of the airspace.

An C-130 Hercules spotted an unmanned aerial vehicle (a UAV or drone) making an “unauthorised” flight on or around 19 September 2023.

“It would have been by sight,” wrote Richard Adams, Taskforce Kiwi founder and a former British soldier.

“[I]n short, there are no on board detection systems for drones,” Adams states.
