The Christchurch City Council recorded 187 incidents at the Central City bus exchange in 2024, despite setting aside $4.2 million for security costs.
A few seconds at the central city bus exchange today.
The incident rate for the central bus terminal shows no signs of slowing down, according to data released this morning to The NZ Reporter.
By sheer numbers, the exchange also outranked two other council facilities-Turanga Library and the Riccarton Bus Lounge-in 2024 (see below).
In January, the council refused to disclosure how the $4.2 million is being spent “[A]s this contract is due for renewal and is part way through a procurement process” and to protect its commercial position and “enable” it to “carry on negotiations”.
Today it refused for a second time.

Environment Canterbury figures for the exchange and bus-related incidents have yet to come in.
On Monday, it claimed it had not received the same Official Information request that council received in January, writing that “it appears this email has not been received or registered, and we have no record of it at our end.”
