The Christchurch Call was established to prevent not just the acts of extremists but also the dissemination of such videos.

Wrote the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, it “is the first initiative of its kind, where governments and online service providers have agreed to a series of commitments and ongoing collaboration to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online.”

On Saturday 22 July 2023, the Auckland CBD hosted a Christchurch Call conference over the road from a building site where another shooting had just occurred. High-profile names were in attendance for the call, including former Prime Minister Jacinda Adern and Doug Emhoff, husband of US Vice President, Kamala Harris.

But 4 years on from March 15, the gunman’s video was still available for download.

The Wigram talks with Byron C. Clark, a Christchurch local and author of ‘Fear’, to examine how much progress the Christchurch Call has made, the current state of play in the field of online extremism, the availability of the March 15 video, and the future challenges of policing the online world.

An article focused on the Christchurch Call and its work will follow this podcast.
