Council Leak: Move Tomorrow for Council to Remove Park Terrace Bike Lanes Before Public Consultation Finished

A source has said tomorrow a senior councillor will seek to remove the controversial cycle lanes running along Park Terrace before the public has had its say. Yet a straw poll conducted by The Wigram has shown that public opinion is split over whether to keep it.
The two-way lanes were purportedly added due to impending construction works at Canterbury Museum and the need to “reduce the demands” on the pathway outside the council facility for “pedestrian safety”.
A source has indicated a senior council member is trying to cobble together enough votes to have the cycleway removed, before the current public consultation process has even finished. The person referred to is not councillor James Gough.

If the cycleway is confirmed the council, it could be in place for 5 years while the construction works go on.

News of the move to have the cycleway removed drew mixed reviews from cyclists and walkers along Rolleston Avenue and Park Terrace. The Wigram asked 10 locals for their viewpoint.

“I’m not a great fan of the way the cycleways are taking over the roadway. I think they’re a danger in some areas the way it’s handled.
We used to have a proper roadway with bus stops all the way through down to the museum and now we haven’t any at all except down by Peterborough Street.
Because of the cycleways have gone in its blocking off half the road and the buses have got to stop in the middle of the road to and stop all the cars from travelling past.”
