True Crime: Son, Brother, Teenager, Man and Uncle
In light of the Nigel Bom autopsy, sister Krystal gives her account of her brother's life, explaining the rocky teenage years, his becoming an uncle, and challenges he faced prior to his death.
In mid-September 2021, some 6 months had passed since Krystal’s brother Nigel was found dead in his flat, when specialist forensic pathologist Leslie M. Anderson released her findings.
“Nigel was a misbehaved child and teen and that’s what the police seem to focus on the most. Not the last 10-15 years of his life where he was a loving uncle, brother and son.”
Sister, Krystal Martin
In determining the likely cause of Nigel’s death, Anderson mentioned his epilepsy and that Nigel was cognitively impaired and had “angry outbursts (including aggression and violent acts toward others) following head trauma as a child; conduct disorder; passive suicidal ideation with no documented attempts”.
She also noted he smoked, used alcohol, and had abused drugs such as “cannabis, amphetamines” and “benzodiazepines”, and “at various times” had inhaled solvents, “reportedly beginning at the age of 4 with inhalation of petrol fumes.”
Just how much weight Anderson gave to this information in coming to her determination is unclear from the report but they featured prominently near the beginning of her writings.
His sister Krystal Martin was unequivocal that the report did not portray him in the way she knew her brother. In response Krystal gave this account of her brother’s life that was so cruelly snuffed out in March 2021.
“Nigel Born was born on May 12th 1983 in Christchurch New Zealand as Debbie Boms 2nd eldest living child and younger brother to Nicholas. He was eventually an older brother to Simon, Hayley, Krystal (myself) and Harley.”
