The Wigram looks at the public transport crisis in Metropolitan Christchurch.
On Thursday night Environment Canterbury confirmed that nearly 12,000 bus trips were cancelled, stating the:
“Number of cancelled bus trips in the Christchurch metropolitan area for October, November, and December 2022 respectively:
- October - 4111
- November - 4054
- December – 3727”
That is a total 11,892 cancelled bus trips in the space of three months. This does not include figures before October or for 2023.
While the nationwide driver shortage is common knowledge, the numbers of cancelled buses in the Christchurch Metropolitan area and the chronic nature of the issue has not been publicly unknown until now. ECAN responded:
Greater Christchurch has one of the lowest rates of trip suspensions and cancellations of all major urban bus networks in the country. In the three-month period from October to December 2022, we transported 2,679,485 passengers, running 135,966 trips and missing 11,892.
But just how many people were not picked up by the 11,892 cancelled trips or have chosen not to use public transport due to its unreliability, is unknown.
