On Wednesday, the city’s leaders removed St James church’s heritage status, granting the Anglican church’s wish and removing a significant barrier to its sale.

The Anglican Bishop of Canterbury, Peter Carrell, told The NZR he was “pleased”.

On 7 August, Carrell wrote “I will reserve comment until the Council makes a decision about whether to accept the recommendation or not.”

On Wednesday, councillors voted in favour of the Independent Hearings Panel to recommendations to remove heritage status from 6 properties.

Council had previously fought to keep the heritage order in place.

The affected properties included 471 Ferry Road, Harley Chambers in Cambridge Terrace, the Blue Cottage on Armagh Street, two demolished buildings and St James church on Riccarton.
