The Papanui RSA was abuzz on Saturday, with the sounds of Ukrainian folk songs, chatting, eating and drinking filling the bar and restaurant.
The Ukrainian Association of New Zealand event raised over $2000 as a part of its campaign to send a container-load of undergarments and donated items out of Auckland this month. The plan is for the donations to reach Ukraine by November in time for its wintertime.
In Part One of two articles about the UANZ fundraising campaign, The Wigram caught up with King’s Counsel Nigel Hampton over a beer during the fundraiser to talk the war in Ukraine and his disaster work here and abroad. He also pondered whether the International Criminal Court could successfully pursue Russia for crimes against humanity for its role in the war.
