Under a private-public partnership, Waikeria was to receive an additional 500 beds and further 100 beds dedicated, says Corrections, “to mental health and addiction service named Hikitia”.
The contractor, CPB Contractors, is also responsible for the completion of Christchurch’s Parakiore Multisport Facility. That project is behind schedule and has been the subject of legal proceedings.
Construction at Waikeria begun in 2018 and was expected to be finished in 2023 but the project has been beset by worker shortages, COVID restrictions and now in its sixth year of construction, the prison has witnessed two health and safety incidents in July and August last year.
